Welcome to Fohr Ground: a podcast about personalities in the influencer space hosted by Fohr’s Marketing Director, Tim Jeffreys.
In episode 25, Tim sits down with Leo Chan, the NYC based content creator behind Levitate Style. While he grew up in Queens, he was born in Hong Kong and moved to New York at ten years old with his family. Growing up, he read the pages of GQ and watched popular movies, never seeing anyone who looked like him. That set him off on wanting to be the representation he sought. Sure enough, he did just that.
Before, he worked as a financial analyst and created content part-time with his girlfriend who introduced him to the space. Having followed a lot of women influencers herself, she noticed a gap in the market that Leo could fill. So, he posted more and more of his outfits, attended events after work, and connected with the right people. Once he realized his day job wasn’t right for him, he began saving his money to pursue influencer work full-time.
Not long into his career, he was offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to tour the world on a cruise ship for five months on a brand ambassadorship. On top of creating content, the experience taught him how to become a better influencer. When he returned to New York, things took off for him. He leveraged that into a full-time career.
Like many emerging influencers today, Leo’s path to full-time work was very intentional, having set out with a mission to positively portray Asian men in the media. Hear how he made it work and why it’s so important these positive images exist for the generation to come.
